oh yes! And none of the IBS drugs actually help! I even had one doctor prescribe me some kind of anti-stress medication although I thought I was taking something for IBS. After taking half a days dose I got all confused, lost all co-ordination (including being able to speak properly) and had to leave work early after dropping a tressle table on my arm and then spilling a whole glass of water down my front. Not great when you’re supposed to be teaching A-level Biology! I didn’t dare drive my car and was absolutely livid with the doctor. I should have sued!!
I was tested for parasites, a doctor suggested IBS (which I’d already read was a catch all term), and then I just did an elimination diet for myself and figured it out. That’s why I don’t have an actual diagnosis.
At aged about 12, I remember a nice lady doctor saying “I know there’s something, but I just can’t work out what.” This was mid 1960s. Roll on 40 years……… symptoms got worse and worse, until it was hardly safe to leave the house. One day I made a batch of chilli and had it with rice. Put the rest in the fridge. Next day, more chilli for lunch. Still feeling OK so went to visit brother and SIL. Had a cup of tea and a biscuit there. Next day …bad, bad, bad. Two days of identical eating apart from….one biscuit. After hours in the bathroom, I spent hours on the internet. Found out about the evils of gluten, did a little planning. Within three days I was SO much better.
At the time I was “under investigation” at my local hospital and had undergone the joys of a colonoscopy. They had lost my notes, so referral to procedure had taken about 18 months! When I told my GP about my success with gluten-elimination, I told him that I was too old (!) to spend another six months or so waiting for hospital tests, having to return to eating gluten, and he agreed.
I noticed my health continuing to improve in lots of other ways. I also remembered all the things that had given me bellyache as a child, stuff like lemon barley water. Most of my life I had preferred ‘meals’, and ate very little cake, bread and biscuits. I had never been able to link any culprits before because I had not been aware of the extent to which gluten is used in manufactured products.
I’ve been on the gluten free diet for a few years as was still having problems. The doctor said IBS and gave me medication. I’m thinking that it’s really the dairy and sugar, which I’m going off next week. Doctors do not like diagnosing food intolerances.
Yep, very familiar.
