Seriously though if you are worried that you are a coeliac get an appointment with a doctor so they can fob you off for 9 years and finally tell you it’s IBS. No seriously serious, do go see a doctor.
Also you can find lots of help here of course: https://www.coeliac.org.uk/coeliac-disease/
I hope you get sorted!
If you have been diagnosed already, please share your story of how you found out below! Don’t be shy, this is a safe place. There are no Gluters here
Howard
Find me that uninhabited desert island to live on for a month while I reglutenize myself; then I’ll have a diagnosis.
Brilliant. Lovely to see new Howard the Celeriac comic strips back.
Cheers RGF, how’s it hanging?
Lovely to see you back. I was found by accident!! Complaining I felt anaemic for 4 years (long story short, after 3 day stay in ICU) after coming out of hospital. They repeated checked my iron levels….every time came back normal. You;re doing too much, slow down. Didn’t feel any better and kept making a nuisance of myself (you have to), a couple of times I was told that my B12 was borderline so nothing was done. The third time this happened we had a Locum GP. After a long conversation and him looking over my notes, he said we need to do these tests, it could be pernicious anaemia (basically your B12 doesn’t work properly) this came back normal to everyone’s surprise. Then he actually asked if I had any problem with Bread, biscuits or wheat rye and barley, to whcih the answer was no (I’m whats known as a silent coeliac, I had no symptoms at all) He tested with the TTG that came back positive for Coeliac. In the mean time he put me on b12 jabs and folic acid. My now GP was blessed on his first day at the practice with telling me at 4;30 on a friday afternoon that I have Coeliac Disease. If it wasn’t for the locum taking me seriously they would never have found me. B12 and folic acid deficiency anaemia was the only symptom and they had to dig to find that. Now well under control and no more B12 jabs as my gut has healed enough to allow me to absorb the vitamins and minerals properly. Now have more energy than I have had since I was about 14!! Basically I now don’t feel permanently exhausted, thanks to one very switched on Locum who refused to believe that there was nothing wrong. If I hadn’t been that lucky I dread to think where I would be now (3 years later).
Thanks and thank you for sharing! Ah the locum, I think they are the unsung heroes! I have heard similar stories before, it’s good to get someone who might have a different perspective. Glad you’re better!
